NEW  DELHI, MAY 22 : A six-year-old boy fell into a 300-feet-deep borewell today in Gadriwala village in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Rescue operations are underway.

According to reports, army has been called in for the rescue operation. A JCB machine has been pressed into service to dig up a tunnel towards the borewell.

The machine has been able to dig only 15 feet in one and a half hours. The boy is reported to be stuck at 95-feet-mark in the borewell.

The incident is said to have taken place at 9 am.

The child was trying to save himself from stray dogs when he fell into the borewell, sources said.

Meanwhile, rescuers have provided oxygen to the six-year-old to keep his condition stable. However, the boy seems unconscious, sources said. Efforts are being made to pull him out with the help of a clip as he has reportedly fallen into the borewell upside down.

The village is located 25 kms from the district headquarters, Hoshiarpur.
