Pakistan,Mar 22 :  Nine people were killed in Pakistan after a major earthquake of 6.6 magnitude struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Tuesday. Strong tremors were also felt in northern India. According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicentre of the quake was in Afghanistan’s Jurm at a depth of 180 kilometres.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter Scale hit 133km SSE of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, at 10:17 pm.

In Pakistan, more than 100 people were taken to hospitals in a state of shock in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for Pakistan’s emergency services told The Associated Press.

Pakistan’s Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel issued an emergency alert at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) as well as the Federal Government Polyclinic, reported Geo News.

STRONG TREMORS IN NORTH INDIA

Strong tremors of the earthquake were felt in several North Indian states, including Delhi-NCR. The earthquake was also felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal responded to the quake and wrote on Twitter, “Strong tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR. Hope you all are safe.”

A senior seismologist told PTI that the reason why people in northwest India and Delhi felt the tremors for a relatively longer time is because the “depth of the fault was more than 150 km”. He added that people in northern India first felt the primary waves and then were impacted by the secondary waves.

In Delhi, people rushed out to the streets in panic after the tremors lasting several minutes were noticed by residents.

There was no immediate report of any loss of life or property in India.
