Heavy rain alert in Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Himachal today; Mumbai schools shut

Maharashtra ,July 27: Heavy rains continue to lash different parts of the country, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted downpours for western and central India during the next four days.

Several roads in Uttarakhand were blocked due to landslides triggered by incessant rains. Meanwhile, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been ordered to remain closed in view of heavy rains.

UTTARAKHAND RAIN UPDATE

Several areas in Uttarakhand have been witnessing heavy downpours for the past few days. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for all districts, including the state capital, Dehradun.

Light to moderate rainfall and heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas, the IMD said.

Meanwhile, 241 roads were blocked in Uttarakhand, including the Rishikesh Yamunotri National Highway where clearance of debris is underway. Similarly, Tyuni-Tehri 707A NH was closed to traffic and Rishikesh Badrinath National Highway was also blocked at Pagalnala in Chamoli district.

Two hundred JCBs were deployed to open roads for traffic movement.

Meanwhile, the water level in the River Ganga was recorded at 292.80 metres.

SCHOOLS SHUT AMID RAIN ALERT IN MAHARASHTRA

The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai and several districts in Maharashtra, including Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg areas.

Several areas in Nagpur also faced waterlogging following overnight heavy rainfall.

Heavy cloud cover and heavy rain are likely in Mumbai and the suburbs today, the IMD said.

All schools and colleges in the city have been ordered to remain closed in view of heavy rains. Meanwhile, citizens are advised to stay indoors and stay cautious amid rain alert.

Additionally, Mumbai University on Thursday postponed all exams dated July 27, due to heavy rain and a red alert by IMD.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in nine Himachal Pradesh districts, including Shimla, Solan and Mandi, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Chamba, Hamirpur and Una. These districts are likely to witness heavy rains during the next three days.

The state is on alert due to cloudbursts and flash floods.

Delhi received heavy rains on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging and traffic jams in several areas. The showers brought the temperature down to 23.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal.

The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 37.1 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours that ended at 8:30 am, the official data showed.

A yellow alert was sounded for Delhi on Thursday.

According to the seven-day forecast by the Regional Meteorological Department (RMC), Delhi is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall for the next few days. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 34.4 and 27.1 degrees Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, the Yamuna in Delhi once again crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres on Wednesday after heavy rain in parts of the capital and upper catchment areas.

In the southern regions, the IMD has issued a flash flood warning for Karnataka and sounded an orange alert for Kerala and coastal Andhra Pradesh, predicting heavy to very heavy rain (115.6 to 204.4 mm) from July 24 to 27.

Due to incessant rains, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district has declared a holiday for Anganwadi, Primary and High school in the district on July 27, reported ANI.

Under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts, very heavy to extremely heavy rains over Srikakulam.
