Renowned teacher, education administrator Dharanidhar Kanungo Passes Away

Bhubaneswar, Dec. 23: Renowned teacher and education administrator Dharanidhar Kanungo passed away on the evening of December 18 at his residence in Bhubaneswar. He was 83.
Known for his unwavering dedication to education, Kanungo was a beloved figure among students, parents, and colleagues. His passionate teaching style and genuine care for his students earned him admiration throughout his life. He dedicated his career to nurturing young minds and continued to contribute to education even after his formal retirement.
Kanungo held various esteemed positions during his career. He served as a teacher and headmaster in several schools, including Korua High School, Jayaram High School in Karilopatna, Raisunguda High School, Unit-1 High School in Bhubaneswar, and Tiran High School. Following his tenure as an educator, he was promoted to the role of School Inspector before retiring. Even after retirement, his commitment to education remained steadfast until the end of his life.
Kanungo’s final rites were performed at Swarga Dwara in Puri, attended by his family, including his three sons—Priyabrat Kanungo, Debabrat Kanungo, and Digdarshan Kanungo—as well as his daughter, sons-in-law, and other relatives.
His passing elicited heartfelt condolences from many notable figures, including former minister Bijoy Mohapatra, Congress leader Ratikanta Kanungo, Sarpanch Amiya Kumar Jena, Panchayat Samiti member Mahesweta Samal, journalist Dhirendra Mishra, and Subhas Samal.
Akshaya Kumar Sahoo, Kanungo’s direct student and the Odisha head of the English international daily ‘The Asian Age’ and the national daily ‘Deccan Chronicle,’ paid a touching tribute to his mentor. Reflecting on their association, Sahoo wrote on his X handle:
“Dharani Sir, as he was lovingly addressed by his students, was immensely amiable. He never lost his temper and passionately groomed every student. Truly, he was a jewel whose personality left an indelible mark on his colleagues, students, and their guardians. His passing has created a profound void. I offer my heartfelt tribute to this great soul and pray for the Moksha of his spirit.”
Dharanidhar Kanungo’s legacy as an educator and mentor will continue to inspire future generations.
