Rayagada, Aug. 1: The sanitation situation in Jaykaypur town of Rayagada district in Odisha has become severely mismanaged, with garbage piling up in various parts of the locality. Piles of stinking waste are a common sight, especially behind the ESI Hospital along National Highway 326.

Poor Waste Disposal

Residents have raised concerns over poor waste disposal and waterlogging, particularly in front of the local police station market area during rains. Dead animals are reportedly left to rot instead of being properly disposed of, leading to unbearable stench and health hazards.

Despite repeated complaints from the public, no action has been taken so far. Locals are often seen covering their noses while walking down affected streets due to the foul smell.

The unhygienic environment, worsened by unrelenting rain and irregular cleaning, has made everyday life difficult for residents. Citizens are demanding immediate action to improve sanitation and prevent further health risks.

No change even in upgradation of status

Jaykaypur was recently granted NAC (Notified Area Council) status, yet the town continues to suffer from poor urban upkeep. Although the government emphasizes cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the situation in this industrial town reflects a stark deviation from those goals. Despite lakhs of rupees being spent on sanitation, the mission seems to be only on paper.

Even with a major industrial presence like JK Paper Mills, authorities appear indifferent to maintaining cleanliness. The district administration too seems to be neglecting the newly designated urban area. Residents question why the administration has failed to act despite JK Pur’s elevated status.

Locals concerned over fund misuse

There are also allegations that funds meant for sanitation under the Swachh Bharat campaign are being misused. Locals have expressed concern over the lack of transparency in how government funds, supposedly allocated to panchayats and waste management centers, are being spent.

The local residents have urged the NAC authorities to urgently address the broken sanitation system, ensure proper use of government funds, and uphold the mission of a cleaner and healthier Jaykaypur.
