EC announces dates of elections in Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura
NEW DELHI,JAN 18: The Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for Assembly elections in Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura on Wednesday at a press conference.
Assembly polls will be held in Tripura on February 16 and in Nagaland and Meghalaya on February 27, with the counting of votes scheduled for March 2, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Wednesday.
The five-year term of assemblies of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura will end on March 12, March 15 and March 22, respectively, and before that period, new assemblies have to be constituted.
The press conference marked the official start of the first round of Assembly polls in the new year, in which nine states are headed for elections, deemed crucial in the run-up to the all-important Lok Sabha contest in 2024.
The three poll-bound northeastern states may be small in terms of their electoral size but hold larger political significance.
