The miscreants allegedly abducted two minor girls from Patia railway station area to the railway over-bridge as they were having an evening stroll there.

Bhubaneswar, Jan. 18: Two young girls, aged between 12 and 14 years and one of them a physically-challenged, were allegedly gang-raped by two youths on Monday night near Patia railway station in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar.

The matter came to light on Wednesday after the police disclosed about the incident to the media and announced that one of the accused had been arrested.

According to sources, the Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police and the Government Railway Police (GRP) launched joint raids at several places in the city following a complaint by the family members of the two girls and arrested the prime accused of the case.

Aditya Kumar Sethy, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Khurda Road Zone, said, “We took prompt action after a complaint was filed in this regard. One accused identified as Krushna Chandra Mallick alias Kanha has been arrested. We are interrogating him. On basis of his statement, we will proceed further. The investigation is underway.”

The SDPO informed that effort was on to arrest the second accused.

The miscreants allegedly abducted two minor girls from Patia railway station area to the railway over-bridge as they were having an evening stroll there. There, they tied them up with a rope and raped them for the whole Monday night.

The victim girls were released on Tuesday morning. After reaching their homes, they narrated their ordeal before their parents.

The heinous crime came to the fore after their parents on Tuesday registered a complaint with the GRP.

Later, with the help of Childline officials, the mother of one of the survivors lodged a complaint with the GRP. Based on the complaint, the police launched a manhunt for the two accused and nabbed one of them during a raid.’

Although police have tightened security arrangements in Bhubaneswar for the smooth conduct of the Hockey World Cup, miscreants’ such barbaric act has sent shockwaves in the state capital.
