Bhubaneswar/Odisha, Oct 26 : As India continues to strengthen its indigenous defence capabilities, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has contributed another important milestone to the country’s naval modernisation efforts with the commissioning of INS Mangrol, the Indian Navy’s third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC).

Built using 100% specialised steel supplied by AM/NS India, INS Mangrol was commissioned into service on 12 October 2026 at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The achievement highlights the growing contribution of advanced Indian steelmaking to the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and maritime security objectives.

Mr. Ranjan Dhar, Director & Vice President – Sales & Marketing, AM/NS India, said:”The commissioning of INS Mangrol marks another important milestone in India’s journey towards defence self-reliance. Advanced naval platforms require specialised steel produced to the highest standards of quality and reliability. We are proud that AM/NS India steel continues to support the Indian Navy’s modernisation while showcasing the strength of India’s manufacturing capabilities.”

INS Mangrol is the third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) to be commissioned into service with the Indian Navy. Built with more than 80% indigenous content at Cochin Shipyard Limited, the vessel reflects India’s commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, while showcasing the country’s growing capabilities in warship design, construction and systems integration.

Designed for operations in coastal and shallow waters, INS Mangrol is equipped to undertake anti-submarine warfare, underwater surveillance and low-intensity maritime operations, as well as mine warfare-related tasks. The vessel’s advanced sensors, sonar and weapon systems enhance its capability to detect, track and counter underwater threats, strengthening the Indian Navy’s coastal defence and maritime security capabilities.

AM/NS India is supplying 100% of the specialised steel required for the fleet of eight ASW-SWCs being built for the Indian Navy. Beyond this programme, the company has supplied specialised steel for key naval platforms including INS Visakhapatnam, INS Surat and INS Malvan.

The company has also contributed to several landmark national infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Railway Bridge, Anji Khad Railway Bridge and Bogibeel Bridge among others.

Together, these projects underscore the critical role of advanced Indian steelmaking in strengthening national security, supporting self-reliance and enabling strategic infrastructure development.

Named after Mangrol, a prominent coastal town in Gujarat’s Junagadh district, the vessel celebrates the state’s deep maritime heritage while carrying forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Mangrol, which served the Indian Navy until 2004.
