Sambalpur, May 19: A groom hailing from Burla town in Odisha’s Sambalpur district was on Thursday night picked up and detained by state police for allegedly demanding a two-wheeler as dowry. The high drama happened minutes before the marriage ceremony was to be solemnised.
As per reports, the ‘Nikah’ of Md Shaikh Qureshi from Burla was fixed with a girl from Sriramnagarpada in Bolangir. Everything was fine until the day of marriage.
After Qureshi reached the wedding venue with his baraat, he and his family demanded a two-wheeler as dowry. The bride was shocked by the sudden demand and urged her father not to accede to the groom’s demand.
Infuriated by the denial, the baraatis and Qureshi’s family did not eat the dinner served to them.
The bride’s family said that since no demand for dowry was made prior to the wedding, they were taken aback by the sudden claim for the bike.
As Qureshi remained adamant on his demand for the bike, the family of the bride cancelled the wedding and lodged a complaint at the Town Police station in Bolangir.
Following the complaint, the police picked up Qureshi and his family and detained them at the police station overnight for questioning.
The bride’s family has demanded Rs 5 lakh from the Qureshi’s as the reimbursement of money spent on the wedding feast and other arrangements.
While a probe was launched by the Bolangir police in this connection, the police refused to comment on the incident.
