Contradictory Positions by Rani Kapur on Late Sunjay Kapur

New Delhi, Jan.22: Living with Mandhira Kapur Smith, Rani Kapur’s stance before the Delhi High Court has shifted in a manner that reveals a stark and troubling contradiction. Across two civil proceedings, she presents two entirely opposite portrayals of her late son, Sunjay Kapur—positions that cannot logically stand together.
In the January 2026 suit filed by her, Rani Kapur accuses Sunjay Kapur of being the prime mover of an alleged conspiracy against her. She portrays him as coercive, manipulative, and dishonest, alleging that he intimidated her into signing documents, misused her trust as a senior citizen, siphoned assets into a fraudulent trust, and psychologically pressured her over several years. This narrative casts Sunjay Kapur as a wrongdoer who actively defrauded his own mother.
However, in the earlier September 2025 proceedings—where Rani Kapur appears as Defendant No. 3—she advances a completely different story. There, she relies on Sunjay Kapur’s integrity, meticulousness, and affection to assert her rights as a Class I heir. She pleads that he cared deeply for her, cut short personal travel to attend to her, managed family affairs at her request, and was far too principled and careful to have authored a flawed or forged Will.
These positions are mutually destructive. A claim based on inheritance necessarily depends on the legitimacy and good faith of the person through whom that claim flows. One cannot both rely on a son’s moral character to claim entitlement and simultaneously denounce him as a fraudster. The contradiction goes to the root of credibility, not mere detail. Across two suits before the same Court, Rani Kapur asks the judiciary to believe two irreconcilable versions of the same person. Both cannot be true.
