Dalit anti- liquor women leader killed by liquor mafias
Jajpur, May, 5 : A drive against the illegal sale of liquor in village Barei of Jajpur district by some anti- liquor women took a turn for the worse when a dalit anti- liquor woman leader was brutally killed by liquor mafias on Monday night .Many women under the leadership of Laxmi Jena (38) a dalit had undertaken a drive recently to root out the ongoing illegal sale of illicit liquor in village Barei under Mangalpur police station by a liquor mafia Bijay Jena and his family members. They umpteen times urged the liquor seller Bijay not to sell liquor in the village but he did take any heed to the pleas of the villagers for which he was summoned to the village committee on Sunday where the villagers unanimously passed a resolution and directed Bijay and his family members to refrain from selling the liquor in the village. But Bijay refused to stop selling liquor and threatened to kill anti- liquor women .
On Monday , the liquor vendor Bijay along with his younger brother Manguli and their father Balaram barged into the house of the deceased and started abusing and attacking Laxmi Jena the leader of the anti- liquor movement , her father-in-law Kailash and sister-in-law Reba when they protested , Bijay suddenly in a rage attacked Laxmi’ ‘s head with a brick as a result she suffered serious head injuries . She was first admitted in the Community Health Center (CHC) at Mangalapur. Later she was shifted to SCB medical college and hospital at Cuttack where she succumbed to her serious injuries on Monday night . Police are investigating the case, said the IIC of Mangalpur police station Asit Ranjan Mohanty.
