Despite weakening of Cyclone Jawad, several parts experience heavy rains

Bhubaneswar, Dec. 5: Despite the weakening of the system, several parts of Odisha on Sunday experienced heavy torrential rains under the influence of Cyclone Jawad.
Umashankar Das, weather expert of IMD’s Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar said that the deep depression remnant of the cyclone Jawad now lay centered about 270 kms from Puri, 200 kms from Gopalpur and 360 kms from Paradip.
“It is likely to move north-northeast wards, weaken further into a depression by morning of December 5, reach Odisha coast near Puri around noon,” said Das.
According to Das, Gopalpur recorded the highest 60 mm of rainfall, followed by 46 mm of rain in Paradip, Chandbali (28 mm), Balasore (24mm), Bhubaneswar (24.3 mm) and Puri recorded 21 mm of rainfall. As the system will approach Puri, the wind speed is expected to be around 60 kmph, said Das.
“Cautionary signal number 3 will remain in force in the port regions of Odisha. Some districts in north Odisha will experience rainfall activities on December 6,” Das added.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Warning’ for heavy to very rainfall in five districts of Odisha on Sunday. The alert was issued for the districts such as Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur. The Twin Cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar will also experience heavy rainfall today.
