BHUBANESWAR, OCT. 13: A girl on Monday committed suicide at Kultajor village under Kantamal police limits in Odisha’s Boudh district as a local youth always played villain and ensured that she did not get the succeed in getting married.

The deceased was identified as Panchami Bhoi daughter of Chhabila Bhoi of Kultajor village.

Panchami’s father alleged that one Kuna Dharua of Ghatul village had a year ago approached him with a proposal to marry his daughter. However, due to certain reasons, he did not agree to his proposal.

A couple of days ago, another proposal came for Panchami from a youth in the neighbouring Gidamal village in the district and both the sides agreed and fixed the marriage.

However, Kuna called the bridegroom over the phone and threatened the latter for dire consequences if he married the girl, the girl’s father alleged. Later, the marriage was called off by the bridegroom’s family members.

Depressed over the matter, Panchami at around 3 AM on Monday attempted self-immolation by pouring kerosene. Though she was rescued and rushed to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir by her family members, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

“As her marriage proposal was called off, Panchami felt dejected. She told me that Kuna is not allowing her to live peacefully,’ said Panchami’s father Chhabila Bhoi. He added in many previous occasions, Kuna also played the villain by talking ill about his daughter to the prospective bridegroom families.

Panchami’s body was sent for post-mortem and will be handed over to her parents soon. Locals alleged that Kuna was in love with Panchami and as her parents refused his marriage proposal, he used to spread rumours against her.

The family members of Panchami had not lodged any written complaint at the police station in connection with the incident till this report was filed.
