Keonjhar/Jhumpura: After son of the soil Mohan Charan Majhi became Chief Minister of Odisha, Keonjhar district is now seeing an unprecedented pace of growth across sectors. Long-neglected issues are being brought to the forefront, and the pace of administrative response has picked up significantly.

The gaps in rural infrastructure are being bridged at a rapid pace. Roads and bridges—many of which had remained in poor condition for years—are being repaired, while new connectivity links are taking shape across remote pockets such as Telkoi, Bansapal, and Ghatagaon. Officials say that rural road projects under PMGSY and Biju Setu Yojana have been fast-tracked with specific timelines, giving villagers easier access to markets, hospitals, and schools. Several panchayats that lacked all-weather connectivity are now seeing major upgrades.

What has come as a greater assurance for local aspirations is the renewed push for large-scale industrialisation, including the mega steel projects proposed by POSCO and JSW. Once completed, these projects are expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, giving the region’s youth a strong alternative to migration. Keonjhar, despite being one of the richest mineral belts in India—with massive deposits of iron ore, manganese, and chromium—has historically lagged behind in attracting major downstream steel and ancillary industries. The Chief Minister’s intervention, officials say, has revived investor confidence and paved the way for a more structured industrial ecosystem.

The social sector, too, is witnessing transformation. The CM’s intervention has brought significant improvements in health services, with primary health centres receiving additional doctors and paramedical staff. Several long-vacant posts at district headquarters hospital and CHCs have been filled, while plans for upgrading Ghatagaon and Anandapur hospitals are already underway. Mobile health units have also been deployed in tribal-dominated pockets to improve outreach.

Education, another long-neglected area, is seeing a surge of new appointments. Schools and colleges that remained understaffed for years have received new teachers, especially in science and mathematics. Hostels for ST/SC students are being refurbished, and digital classrooms are being introduced in a phased manner. Skill development centres, in collaboration with private industry, have begun offering training in welding, machine operations, and data entry to enhance employability.

With the district’s own MLA now helming the state as the CM, Keonjhar’s long-pending demands—from mining-linked development to improved livelihoods—are gaining long-awaited attention, giving residents fresh hope that the momentum will continue in the years ahead.
