Maharashtra ,July 23 : Four days after a massive landslide buried a village in Maharashtra’s Raigad, leaving 27 dead, rescue operations were called off by the district administration on Sunday. As per officials, 78 people are still missing.

The decision was taken after a meeting between rescue officials, the state government, and villagers. According to officials, the last body which was recovered on Saturday appeared to be decomposing.

According to district administration, the undetected bodies and animals were decomposing, spreading a foul smell across the area.

On Wednesday, a landslide hit Irshalwadi village, which is situated on the top of a fort. Since the village is located in a remote area, rescue teams had to trek for hours to reach the area. The heavy rainfall in the area also adversely impacted the rescue teams’ efforts to find the missing people.

A special camp will be held to issue various certificates and documents, including Aadhaar cards, to villagers who have lost the same in the landslide, the official added.

In a bid to rehabilitate the people who lost their homes in the landslide, the state government said it will provide homes for all the people of Irshalwadi.
