Malkangiri, Dec. 24: The Malkangiri unit of the Biju Janata Dal , under the leadership of former Member of Parliament Pradeep Majhi, raised serious concerns regarding the paddy procurement process in the district. Addressing a press conference today, Majhi highlighted alleged irregularities in the ongoing Mandi system and criticized the BJP-led government for the plight of farmers.
According to Majhi, the Mandis in Malkangiri district began operations on December 16, 2024. However, despite eight days having passed, farmers have not yet received vendor receipts, leaving the procurement process at a standstill. He alleged that millers are forcibly deducting 5 kilograms per quintal of paddy, a practice he claimed is being supported by the district administration.
“The farmers, after waiting for six months to sell their paddy, are now being forced to sell to private parties or transport their produce to neighboring Chhattisgarh due to the administrative failure,” Majhi stated.
Expressing his discontent, Majhi blamed the BJP government for the farmers’ distress and warned of serious consequences if the issue is not streamlined, then they will launch an agitation from January 10, 2025. The District Collector and the Chief Supply Officer will be held accountable for this crisis.
The BJD leader’s remarks reflect growing frustration among farmers, who are seeking immediate intervention to ensure fair and timely procurement of their produce. Majhi’s ultimatum signals potential unrest in the district if corrective measures are not taken soon.
