Malkangiri,21 August 2024:-The SC/ST Joint Action Committee of Malkangiri observed a district-wide bandh today in support of the Bharat Bandh, opposing the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the implementation of the creamy layer in SC/ST quota reservations. The committee condemned the ruling, calling it unconstitutional and a violation of Articles 341 and 342, which safeguard the reservation rights of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Committee members expressed their disappointment, stating that the Supreme Court’s directive for the state government to implement desegregation swiftly undermines the principles laid out by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. They accused the ruling of being a deliberate attempt to weaken the SC/ST communities and disrupt social harmony.
The Malkangiri bandh, which lasted from 6 AM to 6 PM, saw a complete shutdown of traffic, shops, and marketplaces across the district. Key members of the SC/ST Joint Action Committee, including President Jarashbar Madi, Advisor Prabhakar Handal, General Secretary Haribandhu Galori, Working President Sanu Anugu, and others, were present during the bandh.
The bandh was a show of solidarity with the nationwide Bharat Bandh, reflecting widespread discontent among the SC/ST communities over the recent court decision.
