Bhubaneswar, July 7 :Manmohan Samal is set to continue as president of the Odisha unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with a formal announcement expected on Tuesday. The 66-year-old leader, a veteran organiser and Sangh Parivar member, filed his nomination as the lone candidate for the post on Monday.

The nomination process at the BJP state headquarters saw Samal submitting his papers before returning officer and senior party leader Pratap Sarangi, in the presence of central observer Sanjay Jaiswal, appointed by BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda. “Only one nomination has been received — that of Manmohan Samal. The official announcement will be made tomorrow,” Jaiswal informed.

Samal’s likely continuation comes at a crucial time for the party in Odisha. Under his leadership, the BJP secured a historic victory in the 2024 general and assembly elections, ending the 24-year rule of the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD). The party won a majority in the state assembly and captured 20 of the state’s 21 Lok Sabha seats — an unprecedented achievement for the BJP in Odisha.

A native of Bhadrak district, Samal has been active in Odisha politics for over three decades. He earlier served as state BJP president between 1999 and 2004, and as Odisha’s Revenue and Disaster Management Minister during the BJP-BJD coalition government from 2000 to 2009.

Reappointed state president in March 2023, Samal steered the party through the high-stakes 2024 elections. However, several challenges lie ahead. Despite the BJP’s electoral success, the BJD still controls all 30 district councils and dominates over 90% of the state’s urban local bodies, having secured 10 lakh more votes than the BJP in the assembly polls. Strengthening the party’s grassroots base before the 2027 local body elections is a top priority.

Samal also faces the task of guiding the inexperienced Mohan Charan Majhi government, which is yet to fill several key positions in state-run corporations and boards — a delay that has unsettled party cadres awaiting political rehabilitation.
