Materials Recovery Department of SAIL, RSP enhances solid waste utilisation of the Plant by despatching record 2 Lakh tonnes of Blast Furnace slag
Bhubaneswar, July 19: The Material Recovery Department (MRD) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has dispatched record 2 Lakh tonnes of mixed BOF Slag in less than a year. This has led to significant increase in solid waste utilisation apart from earning revenue for the company and ensuring uninterrupted production by generating space for dumping of slag.
Notably, Slag generated in the process of iron and steel making is processed by FSNL in its processing area and metallic contents are separated for use as melting scrap. Waste slag is dumped in RSP dumping yard. Every year about 6 Lakh ton slag is dumped and over a period of years about 60 Lakh tons of slag had got accumulated inside RSP premises. This had led to difficulties in further dumping of slag due to the space constraint.
The MRD department initiated disposal of slag to interested external customers in the year 2020 and proposed to dispose 2 Lakh ton slag (mixed BOF slag) from New Plate Mill slag dump area through SGP gate on trial basis. Material Recovery Department prepared a foolproof disposal plan and monitored disposal of slag with safety.
The disposal of slag started on 4th October 2021 and successfully completed on 4th July 2022. This external dispatch of slag has not only generated revenue of Rs 20 Crores but has also developed area for future slag dumping. Most importantly, disposal of the solid waste has led to a better environment inside the Steel Plant.
