Media roundtable highlights SAM challenges in Balangir District

Balangir:-Balangir is a district In Western Odisha,faces significant challenges in tackling malnutrition,particularly among children and women of reproductive age.Despite ongoing government initiatives and interventions,the district continues to struggle with poor nutrition outcomes.UNICEF’s roundtable discussion seeks to address the underlying causes of malnutrition in Balangir,explore the health outcomes related to it,and identify effective interventions.

To combat malnutrition,UNICEF in collaborati- on with the district social welfare department (DSW)hosted a media roundtable in Balangir. The roundtable focused on addressing severe acute malnutrition(SAM) in the region and highlighted the critical role of multi-sectoral collaboration and media engagement in raising awareness and improving outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Sushama Mahapatra,District Social Welfare Officer(DSWO)of Balangir,emphasized the critical need for effective severe acute malnutrition (SAM) management in the region, highlighting the district’s ongoing struggle with malnutrition.She acknowledged the vital role of Anganwadi workers and local health centers in delivering essential nutrition services to children and mother’s.She stated,”malnutrition remains a pressing concern,but with the support of local organizations,health workers,and other stake holders,we are confident in our ability to make significant strides.Community involvement has  been key to the success of these intervention, and committed to strengthening these grassroots efforts”.

Sourav Bhattacharjee,UNICEF’s Nutrition Specialist,led a session on the Overview of malnutrition and SAM Management, highlighting that 40percent of children in Balangir are stunted and 15percent suffer from wasting.He emphasized that SAM management requires a holistic approach involving health services,sanitation,and education,stating,”Effective SAM management not only saves lives but also enhances children’s long term well-being and cognitive development.”Bhattacharjee also stressed the crucial Role of Media in Raising Awareness,noting that responsible media coverage can amplify efforts to combat malnutrition.”The media has the power to shift the narrative and bring focus to the silent crisis affecting so many children,”he remarked.

An engaging open discussion and question and answer session allowed participants to exchange insights and address the challenges surrounding malnutrition and child health in Bolangir.Media representatives pledged their support in raising awareness and maintaining the focus on Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)as a priority in public discourse.

The media roundtable laid the groundwork for future initiatives,emphasizing the crucial role of multi-sectoral collaboration in achieving lasting health improvement for children and mothers in Balangir.
