BHUBANESWAR, JAN. 1: Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday shot a proposal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take necessary steps for setting up an international airport at Puri.

In his letter, Mr Patnaik projected that the proposed airport at Puri be named ‘Sri Jagannath International Airport.’

The state government has mentioned that while land for the project has already been identified at Puri, it will extend all possible assistance to the Centre for establishing the airport in a record time.

Mr Patnaik has also requested the Prime Minister to direct the Union civil aviation ministry to take up this airport as a ‘priority project’.

Puri, the abode of Lord Jagannath, is revered as one among the Char Dhams (four major places of pilgrimage) and crores of Hindus from across the globe visit the pilgrim town every year.

Apart from the world famous RathYatra, Puri is organically linked to two Ramsar sites—Chilika Lake on one side and Bhitarkanika National Park on the other.

Besides, the coastal highway passes through Puri and connects the Paradip port and green field Astarang port. There is a great potential for economic synergy along the entire corridor, wrote Mr Patnaik.
