‘Husband attempted to kill me, brother-in-law tried to rape,’ alleges woman and seeks justice from CM

BHUBANESWAR, NOV. 19: A 36-year-old woman has prayed to Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik to take action against her engineer husband who allegedly tried to kill her as she opposed his multiple extra-marital affairs.
“Sir, I’m praying to you for justice. I have lodged a complaint with the Mahila Police Station here against my husband Pradeep Kumar Mohanty for attempting to kill me as I opposed his multiple extra-marital relations. My husband’s younger brother also attempted to rape me. My in-laws, instead of supporting me, have been abusing and harassing me since I got married in 2008,” Babita Swain, the woman, tweeted to the CM.
She has sought justice from state director general of state police, Shri Abhay, on the matter.
In a complaint lodged at the Mahila Police Station, Babita said on October 31 night her husband and in-laws tried to kill her by strangulation as she opposed the latter’s illicit relationship with her younger sister-in-law (widowed wife of husband’s younger brother).
“My husband Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, now posted as executive engineer of rural works department at Deogarh, is 19 years senior to me. Though his actual date of birth is December 13, 1965, he told my family that he was born on December 13, 1971. On the very fourth night of our marriage when the married couple meets for the first time as per Hindu system, I found my husband speaking to other women over telephone and ignoring me. When I protested, I was brutally assaulted. I have been deprived of my motherhood as my husband always ignored me and maintained multiple relationships with young girls and married women” alleged Babita.
“My husband’s younger Prakash Chandra Mohanty has tried to molest and rape me on several occasions. Though I brought this matter to the notice of my husband and in-laws, they scolded me instead of cautioning the culprit,” she said.
The Mahila Police Station inspector, Banita Maharana, said a case has been booked under various sections of 498 (A) 323, 354 (A), 294, 307 and 34 of Indian Penal Code and 04 of Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
“We have registered a case and served notice to the accused to appear before us. We will try to provide legal remedies to the victim,” said inspector Ms Maharana.
