The Working Committee serves as the Congress’ executive power and has the ultimate decision-making authority in the interpretation and implementation of the party’s constitution.
39 MEMBERS IN CONGRESS’ TOP BODY
The reconstituted Congress Working Committee consists of 39 members including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Sachin Pilot, and Shashi Tharoor, among others.
The decision to induct Sachin Pilot into the committee comes ahead of the Rajasthan Assembly polls in an attempt to cool the tensions between him and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
SACHIN PILOT INCLUDED IN COMMITTEE
From the time the Congress came to power in Rajasthan in 2018, Gehlot and Pilot have engaged in a battle for influence. In 2020, Pilot led a rebellion against the Gehlot administration, leading to his ouster as the Deputy Chief Minister.
However, in July this year, Sachin Pilot said that he had decided to resolve his differences with Gehlot to form a united front ahead of the Rajasthan polls, based on Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s advice.
Shashi Tharoor, Anand Sharma and Mukul Wasnik, who were part of the group of 23 leaders that had raised questions about the party’s leadership under Sonia Gandhi in 2020, are among the general members of the new CWC.
Former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Pratibha Singh have also been included in the important panel.
The CWC was formed months after Kharge became the party president on October 10 last year and replaces the Steering Committee that was formed as a stop-gap arrangement.
