NEW DELHI,DEC 31 : The Centre on Sunday declared Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) an ‘Unlawful Association’ under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The organisation was earlier headed by deceased separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the outfit was involved in “forbidden activities to separate Jammu and Kashmir from India and establish Islamic rule.” “The group is found spreading anti-India propaganda and continuing terror activities to fuel secessionism in Jammu and Kashmir,” Amit Shah said.

“Under PM Narendra Modi’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, any individual or organisation found involved in anti-India activities will be thwarted forthwith,” Amit Shah said on X.

This comes days after the government banned the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) (MLJK-MA) for being involved in anti-national and secessionist activities and “inciting people to establish Islamic rule” in Jammu and Kashmir.

The MLJK-MA, chaired by Masarat Alam Bhat, was banned for being involved in “anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda.” The Ministry of Home Affairs said that the objective of the outfit was to “get freedom of Jammu and Kashmir from India” and “realise its merger with Pakistan and establish Islamic State in Jammu and Kashmir.”
