When singer Mia Takarabe released her first song Heartless alongside 2x GRAMMY nominated Steve Aoki, the world pressed play. But India did something different. India pressed save. The debut single from the half-Indian Global J-Pop artist has registered a 70per cent save rate in India, the highest benchmark for any market in the world. To put that in context, saving a song on Spotify is an active, intentional act. It is a listener deciding that this is not a song they want to hear once. It is a song they want to come back to. Again and again. India’s response to Heartless has not been mere passive consumption. It has been ownership. And given who Mia Takarabe is, that is not a surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mia Takarabe is half-Indian. Born in Adelaide, raised between Tokyo and Melbourne, she carries Indian roots that are not incidental to her identity but central to it. She has been credited with bringing J-Pop to India through Heartless, and India has received that arrival with a warmth and intensity that no other country has matched. The song crossed 1.2 million combined streams across all platforms in the initial weeks of it\u2019s release. Every market is responding. But India is responding differently. India is responding like the song always belonged to it. Because in many ways, it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India has spent decades consuming Japanese culture through anime, gaming, and fashion without ever quite having a J-Pop artist to call its own. Mia Takarabe, with her Indian heritage and her Global J-Pop vision, is that artist. The 70per cent save rate is not just a streaming statistic, but a cultural statement in its own right. It is India recognising itself in a genre it has always loved from a distance, and deciding that the distance is no longer acceptable. With Heartless continuing to climb globally and Mia Takarabe only at the beginning of what promises to be a significant international career, India’s relationship with Global J-Pop has changed permanently.
