Guwahati\/Assam, Sep 6 : Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Geetanagar College at the Srimanta Sankardev International Auditorium of Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra here in the presence of Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan and Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The newly constructed academic building of Geetanagar College, built under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), was also dedicated to the students on the occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sarma congratulated the principal, faculty members, students and staff of the college on completing 50 years. He paid tribute to the institution’s first Principal, Padma Shri awardee Indira Miri, its first Governing Body president Khanindra Chandra Barua and its first secretary and Sahitya Akademi Award winner Suchibrata Raychaudhury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chief Minister announced that the State Government would provide financial assistance of \u20b93 crore for introducing a Commerce stream at Geetanagar College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recalling the history of the institution, Sarma said the college was established in 1977 as Kanya Mahavidyalaya with the objective of empowering women through education. It was subsequently renamed Geetanagar College and has since established a distinct identity in Assam’s educational landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sarma said that during his tenure as Assam’s Education Minister, he had the opportunity to be associated with the provincialisation process of the college. He appreciated the institution’s efforts to provide students with opportunities beyond classroom education, including its Memoranda of Understanding with premier institutions such as IIT Guwahati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chief Minister also lauded the college’s initiatives in the Bonda areas of Kamrup Metropolitan district, particularly in cleanliness and adult literacy, describing them as evidence of the institution’s social responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emphasising the changing nature of education and employment, Sarma said that academic knowledge alone was no longer sufficient in the rapidly advancing technological environment. Students, he said, must combine knowledge with practical skills, analytical thinking and innovative capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He highlighted various initiatives of the State Government, including the North East Skill Centre, Skill University and modernisation of polytechnics and ITIs, and urged the youth to make full use of these opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sarma also stressed the importance of developing an ecosystem for start-ups and entrepreneurship in colleges. He pointed out that the State Government had established a dedicated Department of Innovation, Incubation and Start-ups to encourage entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to emerging technologies, the Chief Minister said students needed to familiarise themselves with Artificial Intelligence, 5G, Big Data, Robotics, the Internet of Things, Quantum Computing, Geonomics and 3D Printing, which are increasingly influencing human life and the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further said Assam needed to develop a strong technology ecosystem, particularly in emerging areas such as semiconductors, Artificial Intelligence and data processing, so that technology-driven industries and enterprises could be attracted to the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Calling for an ecosystem for Industry 4.0 technology in Assam, Sarma said this would require changes not only in academic curricula but also in the outlook and mindset of the younger generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stressed that the purpose of education was not merely to impart knowledge but also to cultivate wisdom and good character, while commitment and devotion to the nation should remain at the core of the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Calling upon students to contribute to national development, the Chief Minister urged them to use their intelligence and creativity to create new resources. \u201cDestructive activities and anarchy cannot be our ideals. Our objective must be creation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Guwahati Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi, MLA Pradyut Bordoloi, former MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, Commissioner and Secretary of the Higher Education Department Narayan Konwar, Principal of Geetanagar College Dr. Satyajit Kalita and several other dignitaries were present at the programme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
