GUWAHATI, Sep 7: Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan on Monday laid the foundation stone for the first phase of a \u20b9110-crore infrastructure development project at Gauhati University in the presence of Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Vice-President also attended a public meeting with students, faculty members and distinguished citizens of the university and unveiled the fifth revised and expanded edition of Chandrakanta Abhidhan, published by Gauhati University Press. He also released Bhupen Hazarika \u2013 Hundred Years of a Wandering Song, published in connection with the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at the function, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said the State Government had announced a \u20b9250-crore grant for the development of Gauhati University’s infrastructure. The \u20b9110-crore project for which the foundation stone was laid today constitutes the first phase and includes academic buildings, hostels and residential quarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Sarma urged the university authorities to submit proposals for the remaining \u20b9140-crore projects at the earliest so that the government could approve them within the current financial year. He also announced that additional funds would be provided to upgrade the university stadium to international standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Describing Gauhati University as an institution closely associated with the emotional and intellectual life of Assam, the Chief Minister said the university had grown into a major centre of education and culture through the contributions and sacrifices of generations of people. He noted that more than three lakh students are currently connected with the university through over 300 affiliated colleges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the university had also contributed to society by preserving endangered languages and dialects of the Northeast, connecting traditional knowledge systems with contemporary science and introducing new courses in response to changing employment requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe true evaluation of a university is reflected in the intellectual wealth it creates and the values it instils in its students,\u201d Dr. Sarma said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the Chief Minister called for the development of a skilled and globally competitive young generation. He said Assam’s young population offered enormous potential and stressed the need to prepare the state’s youth as global-standard human capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Sarma urged Gauhati University to incorporate foreign languages such as Japanese, English and German into its curriculum to improve the global competitiveness of its students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also called for the university to develop itself as a modern research hub in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, data mining and advanced technology. Referring to the upcoming semiconductor industry at Jagiroad, he stressed the need to create a supporting ecosystem for semiconductors and electronics within educational institutions in Assam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chief Minister further urged students to adopt positive and constructive thinking and contribute towards building a stronger Assam. He expressed confidence that Gauhati University would help nurture a generation capable of realising the vision of making Assam the best state in India by 2047.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Nilima Devi, several MLAs, Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Registrar Prof. Utpal Sarma, professors, students and other dignitaries were present at the programme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
