NEW DELHI,MAR 1 : When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stepped into the White House on Friday, he was hoping to secure a critical mineral agreement and solidify US backing to accelerate the end of Russia\u2019s invasion. Instead, the meeting spiralled into chaos, with US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance delivering a scathing dressing down as Zelenskyy fought to make his case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fallout was swift and severe\u2014no deal was signed, no joint statement was issued, and Zelenskyy\u2019s delegation was asked to leave the White House in a not-so-subtle dismissal. As the world reacted with shock, Trump doubled down, branding the Ukrainian leader \u201cdisrespectful\u201d and questioning his commitment to peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With global leaders weighing in\u2014some rallying behind Zelenskyy, others applauding Trump\u2014the diplomatic firestorm was quick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A high-stakes meeting between Trump, Vance, and Zelenskyy quickly spiralled into a contentious debate after Vance accused Zelenskyy of being disrespectful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As tensions escalated, Trump raised his voice, nearly shouting at the Ukrainian leader: \u201cYou\u2019re gambling with World War III.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The press event took an unexpected turn when Trump was questioned about his stance towards Russian President Vladimir Putin, a leader he has often been accused of being too friendly with. Trump, who had recently referred to Zelenskyy as a \u201cdictator,\u201d defended his approach, saying he was aligning himself with \u201cboth of them\u201d in pursuit of peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vance echoed Trump\u2019s position, arguing that former US President Joe Biden\u2019s confrontational approach towards Putin had only fuelled further conflict. \u201cThe path to peace and the path to prosperity is maybe engaging in diplomacy,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zelenskyy immediately challenged the notion, pointing out Putin\u2019s history of violating ceasefire agreements. \u201cWhat kind of diplomacy, JD, are you speaking about?\u201d he asked. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vance fired back: \u201cI\u2019m talking about diplomacy that\u2019s going to end the destruction of your country.\u201d He then chastised Zelenskyy, saying, \u201cI think it\u2019s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zelenskyy countered, emphasising the global stakes of the war. \u201cDuring the war, everybody has problems, even you. But you have a nice ocean and don\u2019t feel it now, though you will in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump interrupted sharply: \u201cDon\u2019t tell us what we\u2019re going to feel. We\u2019re trying to solve a problem. Don\u2019t tell us what we\u2019re going to feel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m not telling you…\u201d Zelenskyy began, but Trump cut him off again: \u201cYou\u2019re in no position to dictate that. You\u2019re in no position to dictate what we\u2019re going to feel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump then doubled down, raising his voice: \u201cYou\u2019re not in a good position. You don\u2019t have the cards right now. With us, you start having cards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zelenskyy, appearing frustrated, shot back: \u201cI\u2019m not playing cards, I\u2019m very serious, Mr President.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump, undeterred, responded: \u201cYou\u2019re playing cards. You\u2019re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You\u2019re gambling with World War III, and what you\u2019re doing is very disrespectful to the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fiery exchange continued to deteriorate, with Vance challenging Zelenskyy\u2019s gratitude towards the US. \u201cHave you said \u2018thank you\u2019 once?\u201d he demanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Zelenskyy insisted that he had expressed his gratitude \u201ca lot of times,\u201d Vance pressed further: \u201cNo, in this entire meeting, have you said \u2018thank you\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump then abruptly ended the meeting with Zelenskyy, and their scheduled joint media address was also called off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was Zelenskyy\u2019s fifth White House visit and his first under President Trump. The White House stated that the Ukrainian delegation was asked to leave after the Oval Office blow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Untouched salad plates and other lunch items were cleared away outside the Cabinet Room, where a scheduled lunch between Trump, Zelenskyy, and their delegations was supposed to take place, according to a report by the Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TRUMP CUTS SHORT TALKS<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shortly after the astonishing turn of events, Trump posted on Truth Social and said Zelenskyy is “not ready for peace if America is involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for peace if America is involved because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for peace,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the media later, Trump said Zelensky did not look like a man who wanted peace. The US President insisted that he wanted peace and asserted that a ceasefire could be possible immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“He’s got to say, I want to make peace. He doesn’t have to stand there and say about Putin this, Putin that, and all negative things. He’s got to say, I want to make peace. I don’t want to fight a war any longer, his people are dying,” Trump said, adding, “He doesn’t have the cards”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We are not going to keep fighting. We are going to get the war done or let them go and see what happens. Let them fight it out. I want anybody that’s going to make peace, if he is capable of making peace, which he may or may not be, but I want somebody that’s going to make peace again,” Trump added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZELENSKYY ‘THANKS’ AMERICA<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zelenskyy, who left the White House following the antagonistic exchange, expressed his “gratitude” to the American people after the tense meeting with Trump and Vance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that,” he said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talking to Fox News, Zelenskyy asserted Ukraine won\u2019t enter peace talks with Russia until it has security guarantees against another offensive. He added Friday’s contentious spat with Trump was \u201cnot good for both sides\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
WORLD LEADERS REACT<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fallout from the disastrous Trump-Zelenskyy meeting was immediate, with world leaders responding via social media and official channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking to reporters in Portugal, emphasised continued Western support for Ukraine. “Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the victim. I think we were all right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago, and we must continue to do so.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store called the incident “serious and disheartening.” He remarked, “Ukraine still needs the US’s support, and Ukraine’s security and future are also important to the US. and Europe. Trump’s accusation that Zelenskyy is gambling with World War III is deeply unreasonable. Norway stands with Ukraine in their struggle for freedom.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed solidarity, posting on X, “Dear @ZelenskyyUa, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent a message of encouragement to Zelenskyy: “Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President Zelenskyy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev welcomed the confrontation, posting on Telegram, “For the first time, Trump told the cocaine clown the truth to his face: the Kyiv regime is playing with World War III. The ungrateful pig received a strong slap on the wrist.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova mocked Zelenskyy, questioning how Trump and Senator JD Vance “restrained themselves and didn’t hit him,” calling it a “miracle of restraint.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
