Bhubaneswar, Aug. 21: Odisha\u2019s oldest city Cuttack is staring at a looming safety crisis with 221 buildings officially declared unsafe for habitation. Many of these structures are in a highly dilapidated state\u2014walls shedding plaster, roofs weakened, and foundations unstable\u2014posing grave risks to residents and the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The High Court of Orissa, apprised of the situation by the district administration, has ordered their phased demolition. Notices have been served to the owners and occupants of these dangerous structures, which include eight government-owned and two privately-owned buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOver 200 houses have been marked unsafe. Demolition will be carried out in phases\u2014starting with those obstructing development works and those in extremely precarious condition. Eventually, all unsafe structures will be removed,\u201d said the Cuttack Collector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So far, 15 criminal cases have been registered against defaulters, but compliance has been minimal. Only two institutions have responded: the Commercial Tax and GST departments confirmed that 72 unsafe quarters at Badambadi New LIC Colony have already been vacated, while the road and building (R&B) department has been asked to prepare demolition estimates. A status report is also awaited on four unsafe quarters in Badambadi High Court Colony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite warnings, several families continue to live in unsafe houses. While some have moved out, others insist they will vacate \u201csoon.\u201d Concerned locals have urged the administration to act swiftly, fearing that a mishap could endanger nearby roads, schools, and public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The High Court has directed the administration to file a detailed affidavit and progress report by September 18. It has further warned that criminal proceedings will be initiated against occupants who defy eviction orders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
