Bhubaneswar, September 5:<\/strong> Tata Power-led Odisha discoms are driving a technological transformation in electricity distribution by embedding automation, smart devices, and digital tools into the state’s power network. These initiatives are enabling faster fault management, predictive maintenance, and a more reliable power supply for nearly 10 million of consumers across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key focus has been the automation of substations and Ring Main Units (RMUs), enabling remote fault detection, isolation, and rapid restoration of supply. Urban outage durations have already seen significant reductions. Devices such as Fault Passage Indicators, auto reclosers\u2014which automatically trip and reclose circuits to clear temporary faults through fast and delayed reclosing cycles, and remote-controlled breakers are further expediting recovery when failures occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discoms are also deploying advanced monitoring tools. Drone-based network audits, thermoscanning, and ultrasonic scanning are helping identify potential weak spots before they cause issues, enabling proactive fault prevention. These technologies are transforming traditional, reactive maintenance into a predictive, data-driven model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In parallel, preventive and predictive maintenance have become top priorities. Odisha\u2019s discoms are using advanced technologies such as drone surveys spanning thousands of kilometres, thermovision cameras for hotspot detection, and diagnostic testing to monitor transformer health. These measures extend the life of critical assets, reduce outages, and enhance overall reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the discoms are also working towards deploying a cyclone-resilient distribution network with stronger poles, covered conductors, underground cabling in vulnerable urban zones, and automation systems that enable rapid power restoration. This resilient network is vital for a state prone to frequent Kalbaisakhis and severe cyclones, ensuring continuity of supply and enabling faster recovery even during extreme weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, these advancements are creating a smarter, more resilient, and future-ready power network.
