Yet, something surprising is unfolding – Gen Z, the digital-first generation, is rediscovering Shah Rukh Khan’s classic love stories and falling head over heels for them. From watching DDLJ again on OTT to lining up for re-releases of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Veer-Zaara’, and ‘Mohabbatein’, today’s young audience is happily embracing SRK’s timeless emotions and love stories, feeling nostalgic for an era they never lived through.

For 18 to 25-year-olds who grew up on superhero blockbusters and short-form content, these sweeping romantic dramas with mustard fields, train station goodbyes, and grand confessions of love offer a sense of emotional clarity and sincerity often missing in modern storytelling. What started as Gen Z casually revisiting SRK’s old films online has now become something bigger — a wave of young viewers rediscovering the magic of pure, old-fashioned romance through his unforgettable stories.

Girish Wankhede, movie trade and marketing expert, believed that Shah Rukh Khan’s bond with Gen Z went far beyond nostalgia — it was rooted in how smartly he had evolved with time. “He had always been forward-thinking. Apart from his films, Shah Rukh Khan consistently kept himself relevant — engaging with the media, adapting to technology, and even understanding OTT platforms before many others. He never positioned himself as just an actor, but as a brand, ” Wankhede said.

Producer and film business expert Girish Johar said this renewed fascination is no accident. “If you are talking specifically about Shah Rukh Khan, he is a huge global star. His presence is known worldwide, across languages and generations. He has his own aura,” Johar explained.

“When these films, which did so well in the past, are revisited today, the audience still finds them entertaining with a very strong emotional connection. Even now, when you watch ‘DDLJ’, it brings a smile to your face. That timeless emotional appeal helps these films transcend eras.”

Indeed, SRK’s romances have transcended time, geography, and technology. Clips from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Mohabbatein’ or ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ often resurface on Instagram Reels and TikTok, remixed with Gen Z aesthetics and ironic captions — yet the core emotion remains intact. The same generation that jokes about love being “a scam” still swoons over Raj’s charm or Rahul’s playful vulnerability.

From a business standpoint, the trend has not gone unnoticed. Production houses like Yash Raj Films have begun reviving classics through limited theatrical screenings, often coinciding with SRK’s birthdays or special anniversaries. Johar noted that these are not massive commercial ventures but strategic cultural events. “Studios are reviving these old classics and promoting them in a way that connects with younger audiences. These are not full-scale releases of 1000–3000 screens. They are limited screenings in select cities and time slots, purely to pep up his popularity among Gen Z,” he said.

Adding to that, Wankhede pointed out that while nostalgia helped keep SRK’s legacy alive, it didn’t necessarily bring in big box-office numbers. “Re-releases created buzz and brand recall, but they couldn’t serve as a long-term revenue model. They were great for celebration and cultural connection, but financially, the content had already been consumed,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Rajkumar Malhotra, General Manager of Delite Cinema, explained that the current wave of re-releases was driven more by nostalgia and emotion than by commercial ambition. “Basically, the reason people demanded re-releases was because of the songs, storylines, and performances. In today’s films, you rarely found a pure love story. The movies that Shah Rukh Khan had done — their music and stories had been excellent, and they had already made a lasting place in the audience’s minds. So people simply wanted to revisit that experience — that was the only reason behind the demand.” Malhotra said.

Theatre occupancy mainly depended on the film. If it was a Shah Rukh Khan movie, then even during weekends, a re-release could get around 50–60% occupancy. On weekdays, it became a bit lighter. You couldn’t really expect a re-release to generate big box-office revenue — it usually just covered basic expenses. It was like having a plate full of food and adding a sweet dish to it — just an extra treat, something that gave audiences an additional choice among many others,” he added.

The numbers may not be blockbuster-level, but the impact is undeniable. Each screening doubles as a celebration, fans dressing up as 90s characters, singing along to ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam’ in packed halls, and sharing nostalgic posts that quickly go viral.

Johar agreed that the move isn’t about revenue but relevance. “His brand becomes stronger because he is now attracting the new generation as well. Different generations already know him, but the kids now entering the entertainment space also start understanding his star power,” Wankhede added.

What’s remarkable is how Shah Rukh Khan continues to stay relevant even after three decades, not just through nostalgia, but evolution. While his romantic image remains iconic, his recent successes in ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’ show his ability to reinvent himself without losing the emotional depth that defined him. “You cannot survive on nostalgia alone. Many actors have delivered great films, but staying relevant is key. Shah Rukh has done that. He took a break for a couple of years and bounced back with selective films. He always wanted to do action, but he became the king of romance. Now, he is exploring action and doing it at his peak again. That balance of evolution and connection is what keeps him relevant across generations,” Johar pointed out.

For Gen Z, this combination of vintage emotion and modern charisma is irresistible. In a time when love is often reduced to algorithms and swipes, SRK’s cinematic universe feels refreshingly human. His characters remind them that love can be dramatic, hopeful, and imperfectly perfect.

In the end, Gen Z’s love for Shah Rukh Khan’s romantic films is something that connects generations. They may have found him through OTT, but they now see him as their own symbol of everlasting love. And as long as there’s someone, somewhere, still believing in love against all odds – Raj and Simran will always find their train.

-The India Today

MUMBAI , NOV 2 : In an era dominated by dating apps, instant messaging, and “situationships,” one might assume that old-school romance has lost its charm.
