Malkangiri: The Malkangiri Union of Journalists (MUJ), an affiliated body of the Odisha Union of Journalists (OUJ), Bhubaneswar, celebrated National Press Day with fervour at its office campus on Saturday, November 16. The event brought together veteran journalists, senior officials, and media professionals who reflected on the role of the press in safeguarding democracy, especially in an era of digital disruption and growing misinformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presiding over the programme, MUJ president Deba Prasad Dash highlighted the significance of the day, saying, \u201cNational Press Day is a reminder of our responsibility to uphold truth and ensure the press remains the voice of the people, not a tool in the hands of vested interests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional District Magistrate (General) Somnath Pradhan, attending as the chief guest, underscored the challenges posed by unverified digital content. \u201cIn today\u2019s fast-moving information ecosystem, the biggest threat is misinformation,\u201d he said. \u201cRegistered journalists must lead by example and follow ethical practices to maintain public trust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ADM (Revenue) Bedabar Pradhan, Sub-Collector Ashni A. L. (IAS), and retired lecturer-cum-journalist Saroj Das were present as esteemed guests and shared their perspectives on strengthening media literacy and promoting credible news dissemination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Speaker and renowned senior journalist of Odisha, Akshaya Kumar Sahoo, emphasised the evolving expectations from the media. \u201cJournalism today demands far greater vigilance,\u201d he said. \u201cWith the digital space being flooded by unregulated voices, it is the trained journalist who must safeguard accuracy, balance, and accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special guest Vinod Patil H, Superintendent of Police, Malkangiri, pointed to the constructive role journalists play in bridging the gap between administration and the public. \u201cResponsible reporting helps us reach the last mile. The police value the role of professional journalists who present facts without distortion,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUJ vice-president Satyanarayan Panda and secretary Sarat Chandra Maharana also addressed the gathering, stressing unity among journalists and the need for continuous skill development. They reiterated MUJ\u2019s commitment to creating a supportive environment for reporters working in challenging terrains like Malkangiri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the occasion, students excelling in debate and other competitions were felicitated by the guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
