Bhubaneswar\/Odisha, Dec 23 : CSIR\u2013Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT), Bhubaneswar, organised a Workshop-cum-Training Programme on \u201cS&T Intervention for Revitalising Heritage Metal Craft of Odisha\u201d to strengthen traditional metal craftsmanship through modern scientific and technological interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The programme saw participation from nearly 250 artisans across Odisha and focused on technical aspects such as brass melting, forming techniques, decorative coatings, and improved safety and production methods, supported by hands-on demonstrations and interactive sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The workshop was inaugurated by Shri Pradeep Bal Samanta, Hon\u2019ble Minister for Cooperation, Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts, Government of Odisha, in the presence of Mrs. Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, HT&H Department, as Guest of Honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shri Pradeep Bal Samanta highlighted Odisha\u2019s rich metal craft legacy, citing the sacred metal utensils used at the Shri Jagannath Temple, Puri, and emphasised the need to address challenges such as raw material availability, tools, machinery, and cost reduction through scientific solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mrs. Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar stressed the role of research and technology in enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness of the handicrafts sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director, CSIR-IMMT, outlined the institute\u2019s R&D initiatives aimed at reducing wastage, improving safety, and enabling efficient, large-scale production while preserving heritage value. Dr. Nivedita Prusty, Director of Handicrafts, underlined the importance of structured S&T interventions for modernising traditional practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. A.K. Chaubey, Chief Scientist and Programme Convener, presented the programme overview, while the session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Y.S. Chaudhary, Chief Scientist, CSIR-IMMT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
