THAILAND,FEB 11 : A school director was killed and two others, including a student, were injured after a teen gunman went on a shooting rampage at a school in Thailand on Wednesday. According to authorities, the incident involved an 18-year-old shooter, who was eventually arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police said the gunman fired multiple shots at the school in Songkhla province and took several teachers and students hostages, before they were freed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besides the school director, all other hostages were rescued alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A teacher was also among those who were hurt in the incident, which took place in Hat Yai district of Songkhla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A photograph shared by the police showed the moment the suspect was captured. He was barefoot and was wearing shorts and a T-shirt as armed officers held him down on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moreover, a video shared by a witness showed armed police officers storming the three-story school building as the sound of gunfire rang out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In another, students could be seen running down a flight of stairs at the school as police, some wearing helmets and black bullet-proof vests and carrying rifles, shouted: “Go home kids, it’s safe.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India Today Digital could not independently verify either of the two videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local media reports cited by Bangkok Post suggest that, prior to the hostage situation, the police responded to a call about an 18-year-old man who was displaying violent behaviour. He was reportedly trying to harm his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reports said that the teenager snatched an assault rifle from one of the responding police personnel and subsequently entered the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eyewitnesses purportedly said that the man was looking for a teacher who had previously disciplined his younger sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gun violence and ownership are not uncommon in Thailand, where an ex-police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in a gun-and-knife attack at a nursery in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
