{"id":154414,"date":"2026-08-07T17:44:54","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T12:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/indusvalleytimes.com\/news\/?p=154414"},"modified":"2026-08-07T17:55:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T12:25:16","slug":"centre-approves-rs-8970-crore-guwahati-tezpur-four-lane-corridor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indusvalleytimes.com\/news\/centre-approves-rs-8970-crore-guwahati-tezpur-four-lane-corridor\/","title":{"rendered":"Centre approves Rs 8,970 crore Guwahati\u2013Tezpur four-lane corridor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"caps\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">By Dalim Phukan<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guwahati, Aug. 7:<\/strong> The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday approved the construction of the 135.87-km Guwahati\u2013Tezpur four-lane corridor on National Highway-15 at an estimated cost of Rs 8,970.20 crore, a move expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost economic growth in Assam and the Northeast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) toll model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcoming the decision, BJP media panelist Ashish Bharali described it as a landmark step for Assam&#8217;s infrastructure development. In a statement, he credited the approval to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the efforts of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the sustained initiatives of Darrang-Udalguri MP and Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Bharali, the four-lane corridor will not only reduce travel time between Guwahati and Tezpur but also strengthen trade, tourism, industry and investment by improving connectivity with neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the project&#8217;s key features is a 4.9-km Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Tezpur bypass, to be developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force. The project also includes five bypasses with a combined length of 58.7 km to ease traffic congestion in Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dhekiajuli and Tezpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The corridor will comprise 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, 46 underpasses, about 210 km of service roads and a dedicated elephant underpass on the Tezpur bypass, integrating modern road safety and wildlife conservation measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials estimate that the project will nearly double average travel speeds while reducing travel time by almost half. Lower fuel consumption and reduced vehicle operating costs are also expected to benefit commuters, transport operators and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The improved highway will enhance connectivity to eight industrial parks, the aspirational districts of Darrang and Udalguri, Maa Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga and Orang National Parks, besides improving access to major railway stations, airports and inland waterway terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calling the approval a milestone for the Northeast, Bharali said the project reflects the Centre&#8217;s continued focus on infrastructure-led development and
