Bhubaneswar, Aug. 25 <\/strong>: \u00a0Before helping a patient travel thousands of miles for medical treatment, Healing Tourist<\/strong> wants to answer a more fundamental question: Does this patient actually need to travel?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healing Tourist, a medical second-opinion and treatment facilitation platform launching today, is building that question into its operating model. Patients can first submit their medical records for independent specialist review to better understand their diagnosis, treatment options and whether traveling to India for treatment should be considered at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Healing Tourist plans to make the results visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginning with its first Quarterly Transparency Report<\/strong>, the company will publish the proportion of reviewed cases in which its specialist panel advises patients not to travel for treatment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specialist reviewers are paid a fixed professional fee for each review. Their compensation is the same whether they recommend treatment, advise against travel, or suggest that the patient continue care closer to home. Reviewers do not receive additional compensation based on whether a patient subsequently travels or books treatment through Healing Tourist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA medical tourism platform should be willing to tell a patient not to become a medical tourist,\u201d said Chidatmika Khatua, Director of Healing Tourist<\/strong>. \u201cBefore asking where someone should travel for treatment, we believe the first question should be: Does this patient actually need to travel?<\/strong> We are publishing how often our specialists say no because patients should be able to see whether that independence exists in practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separating Medical Advice From the Decision to Travel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healing Tourist has structured its platform around two distinct stages: independent medical review first, treatment facilitation second<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patients can securely submit their existing medical records for review and receive a written second opinion from a specialist<\/strong>. The purpose is to provide an additional clinical perspective on the patient’s condition and treatment options, including whether seeking treatment in India may be appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no requirement for a patient receiving a second opinion to subsequently use Healing Tourist for treatment facilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a patient independently decides to pursue treatment in India, Healing Tourist can then help coordinate the journey, including identifying appropriate hospitals and specialists, coordinating medical information, treatment planning, obtaining estimated costs, scheduling and travel-related assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The principle behind the model is straightforward: the decision about whether treatment abroad is appropriate should come before the business of arranging the trip.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Removing the Incentive to Recommend Travel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healing Tourist says the independence of the specialist review is central to its model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specialist reviewers receive a fixed professional review fee<\/strong> that does not change based on their recommendation. They do not receive additional compensation if they recommend treatment in India, and they have no financial participation in whether a patient ultimately books treatment through Healing Tourist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company is also publishing the relevant provisions of its specialist-panel agreement so patients and other stakeholders can understand how this separation is structured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is to reduce a potential conflict inherent in medical tourism: when the organization helping arrange treatment also benefits financially when the patient decides to travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healing Tourist’s approach is to create a decision point before travel facilitation beginsand then publish data showing what happens at that decision point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Transparency Report Designed to Measure the \u201cNo\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healing Tourist plans to publish its first Quarterly Transparency Report following the end of Q4 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report is expected to include the number of cases reviewed and, most importantly, the proportion of cases in which specialists advise patients that traveling for treatment is unnecessary or not recommended based on the records reviewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, the company intends for these reports to provide patients, healthcare providers and other stakeholders with a measurable view into how frequently the platform’s independent review process results in a recommendation not to travel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTransparency becomes meaningful when you publish something that may not maximize your own revenue,\u201d Khatua said. \u201cIf our specialists believe a patient can receive appropriate treatment closer to home, we want them to say so. And we want the public to know how often that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

200 Specialists Across Seven Medical Disciplines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At launch, Healing Tourist’s clinical network comprises approximately 200 specialists across seven medical disciplines<\/strong>, providing access to expertise across several areas of specialty and complex care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
