Khurda (Odisha), Dec. 8: President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday\nlaid the foundation stone for a memorial at Barunei in Odisha\u2019s Khurda district\nto mark completion of 200 years of Paika Rebellion, a valiant uprising of\nPaikas in 1817 against the British Rule which is often termed as India\u2019s First\nWar of Independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apart from President Kovind, Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal, chief\nminister Naveen Patnaik, Andhra Pradesh Govenor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan, Union\nministers Pratap Sarangi and Dharmendra Pradhan and other eminent dignitaries\nwere also present during the foundation laying ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposed project will come up at the foothills of\nBarunei hills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The memorial is seen as an epitome of Odisha\u2019s valour and\nwill serve as an inspiration for the youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe legend of the Paika Rebellion and Buxi Jagabandhu who\nled an army of the courageous Paikas against the mighty British empire\ncontinues to inspire us even today. Government of India is committed to give\n\u2018Paika Bidroha,\u2019 a cult status in Odisha, its rightful place in history,\u201d\ntweeted Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, the Government of India had released a postage\nstamp and coin to commemorate the Paika Rebellion of 1817. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Similarly, the descendants of families associated with the\nPaika rebellion were also honoured in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
