Bhubaneswar, March 15: Hindalco Industries Ltd (Aditya Aluminium) has been awarded the ASI Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) certification with Provisional status for manufacturing and exporting high-purity primary aluminium in various forms and specifications. The certification also covers the company’s 900 MW Captive Power Plant at its Aditya Aluminium facility in Lapanga, India.
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) on Sunday announced that the Aditya Aluminium unit has successfully met the requirements of the ASI Performance Standard V3.1 (2023). The facility operates a primary aluminium smelter with a rated production capacity of 360 kilotonnes per annum. Its operations include electrolytic potline processes, casthouse activities and anode manufacturing.
The plant manufactures products such as pig ingots, sow ingots, primary foundry alloys and liquid aluminium. In addition, the facility runs a captive power plant to support smelting operations and integrates renewable energy generation within its production system.
The ASI Certification Programme was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is regarded as the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard for the global aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard V3 and ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V2 were launched in May 2022 after a multi-year revision process.
The Performance Standard V3 outlines 11 principles and 62 criteria under three key sustainability pillars—Environment, Social and Governance (ESG). These standards aim to address major sustainability challenges in the aluminium sector, including biodiversity protection, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, circular economy practices and greenhouse-gas emissions.
In 2023, the standards and related documents underwent minor revisions to correct editorial errors and provide additional clarifications. This update resulted in the release of Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) and Chain of Custody Standard V2.1 (2023).
ASI stated that the certification framework provides aluminium industry participants with a strategic and flexible pathway to adopt and strengthen sustainability practices. The provisional certification enables members to begin their ASI certification journey while committing to progress towards Full Certification as soon as practically possible.
