Bhubaneswar, March 15: In a touching act of compassion and humanity, the family of Mrs. Urmila Harichandan donated her liver after she was declared brain dead, helping save the life of a patient suffering from severe liver failure at Utkal Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Mrs. Harichandan had been admitted to the hospital following a serious medical emergency. Despite the best efforts of doctors, she was later declared brain dead. In the midst of their grief, her family displayed remarkable courage and generosity by consenting to organ donation.
Following their decision, the medical team successfully retrieved her liver and transplanted it into a patient suffering from end-stage liver disease, offering the recipient a renewed chance at life.
Organ donation coordinators at Utkal Hospital commended the family’s compassionate and timely decision, noting that such acts play a vital role in addressing the critical shortage of donor organs in the region.
“The family’s ability to turn their personal loss into hope for another patient is truly inspiring. This noble act has potentially saved a life and underscores the importance of greater awareness about organ donation,” said a senior doctor associated with the transplant.
