NFR to Restore New Harangajao Line No. 2 in Assam by September 5

Guwahatii/Assam , Sep 3 : The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making rapid progress in restoring railway infrastructure at New Harangajao station, with Line No. 2 expected to be restored by September 5, 2026.
Around 500 personnel are working round the clock at the site to expedite the restoration process and facilitate the early resumption of normal train operations. As part of the intensive restoration effort, NFR has deployed 22 PC excavators, 12 JCBs and 18 tractors, besides specialised equipment such as pneumatic drills and hydraulic piling rigs.
Restoration teams are engaged in strengthening the affected section, stabilising the railway track formation and carrying out other essential works, with passenger safety being accorded the highest priority.
The New Harangajao yard has been facing continuous settlement and lateral shifting of the railway formation since July 20, affecting normal train operations. As a precautionary measure, train movement has been restricted to Line No. 3.
According to NFR, the problem has been caused by a shift in the natural watercourse and changes in the local drainage pattern, resulting in heavy and concentrated water inflow from the upstream hillside. The accumulation of water beneath the ground has led to deep sub-surface water build-up, affecting the stability of the railway formation.
NFR has undertaken a series of measures, including drainage management, dewatering and stabilisation of the affected formation, to restore the railway lines at the earliest while ensuring safe train operations.
At present, train services through Line No. 3 are continuing under enhanced safety measures. The restoration of Line No. 2 by September 5 is expected to enable NFR to operate more trains through the affected section.
Meanwhile, Line No. 1 is expected to be restored by the end of September 2026.
NFR said it remains committed to completing the restoration works at the earliest by deploying all necessary manpower, machinery and other resources. The railway authority reiterated that passenger safety remains its foremost priority while efforts are underway to restore normal train operations through the Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section.
