Bhubaneswar, Sept 13: CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT), Bhubaneswar in its Diamond Jubilee year is organising “One Week One Lab (OWOL)” campaign during 11th to 16th September 2023. The OWOL campaign was initiated by Dr.Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Minister of S&T,Govt of India and Vice-President, CSIR for all the CSIR laboratories, with important objective for show-casing their R&D activities to stakeholders, scholars, students and common mass.
The 3rd day of OWOL event on 13th September was focussed towards the theme-Environment, Waste Management, Pipeline Transport and this was jointly co-ordinated by Environment & Sustainability Department along with Design and Project Engineering department of CSIR-IMMT.
During the inauguration program at SS Bhatnagar Hall of CSIR-IMMT, Smt. Sulochana Das, BMC Mayor was Chief Guest who shed light on the transformation of the city-sanitization and transportation, focusing on waste management development, especially steel waste management incorporating micro-composting centres in the city. She also looks forward to work on the E-waste transformation in collaborating with CSIR-IMMT.
There were other invited dignitaries: Shri. Pallav Bagla, renowned science communicator, Prof. Amitav Das, Dean of Faculty Affairs, IISER Kolkata, Shri. S.K. Vasudevan, ED, SERPL, IOCL, Bhubaneswar. Prof.Ramanuj Narayan, Director welcomed all the guests and thanked them for their deliberation on the program theme.
Speaking on the event, Shri Pallav Bagla said, “The image of Naya Bharat is the Vikram Lander on the surface of the moon. None of this would have been possible without materials. This will be the defining movement as we go into Amrit Kal towards becoming a developed country. India scripted global history when we put not just the Victory Lander but the Pradyan Rover and the first details of the mineral components nearer the South Pole of the moon have come from India. India’s Chandrayaan 1 and India’s Chandrayaan 3 both will be recorded as legendary emissions. But when people celebrate Chandrayan, I personally like to go back to our vaccine success story and to be able to give more than two billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to Indians and also give it to more than 100 countries. There was 6 1/2 thousand Corona positive samples. If the scientists can do the job, a journalist can also do so. I dive deep into institutions to bring the story and bring it up front so that the Indian public can get to know. We have the best images of the moon surface mapped almost at 30-30 centimeter resolution. But we still do not have a deeper understanding of the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Although, India is the only country which has a ocean named after it. This institution will offer us the technology dive deeper into the understanding”.
The OWOL program also hosted poster display reflecting scientific R&D work undertaken by scientists, scholars and live demonstration of technologies, facilities such as “slurry pipe loop test” etc.related to environment, water, waste management and pipeline transportation to visitors and resource persons.
The OWOL program was concluded with brain-storming and panel discussion session, in which Mr. Prashanta Kumar Mohapatra, Engineer-In-Chief, OWSSB, Bhubaneswar, Shri Soubhagya Kumar Tripathy, GM (E & S) Hindalco, Eastern Plants, Dr. Sandhya Mishra, AGM (Forest & Environment), OMC, Dr.Ambikesh Mishra, DGM (Environment), PPL, Paradeep, Mr. S N Das, Deputy Director, MSME, Govt. of India were panellist. The event was concluded with remarks from Dr. N K Dhal, Chairman and Dr. Snehasis Behera, Co-chairman of the event.
