2 die in sleep in smoke emission caused by diesel power generator

BHUBANESWAR, DEC. 12: Two persons in Odisha’s Keonjhar district died of asphyxiation and two others were admitted to hospital in critical condition due to massive smoke emission from a generator in a house late on Thursday night, police said on Friday.

The mishap took place at around 1.30 AM when the victims were in deep sleep.  The two deceased were identified as Baidhar Nayak and Babaji Nayak. They were declared dead at the district headquarters hospital (DHH).

Of the two injured, one was undergoing treatment at the DHH the other was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after his condition deteriorated.

Sources said Baidhar and his friends had gone to Kathabadi village to attend a relative’s marriage ceremony scheduled to be held on Friday morning. After the electricity went out in the night, they switched on the generator kept in their room and went to sleep. They felt suffocated after the generator emitted thick smoke and felt unconscious.

“Baidhar Nayak and Babaji Nayak breathed their last a few hours after they were rescued in a state of unconsciousness. The other two are being given best treatment in the local district headquarters hospital and SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack,” a senior official of the Keonjhar district administration said.
