Bhubaneswar, Dec. 10: Paradip Port Authority (PPA), one of India’s premier major ports, has reached a significant milestone by handling a record 100.13 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo, marking its eighth consecutive year of surpassing the 100 MMT benchmark.
The port achieved this feat nine days earlier than last fiscal year, recording the milestone in just 253 days compared to 262 days in FY 2022-23. This accomplishment stands as the fastest cargo throughput in the history of Indian major ports, achieved despite global challenges such as reduced demand for iron ore exports and thermal coal shipments.
With its current trajectory, PPA is poised to set a new record by handling 150 MMT of cargo by the end of this fiscal year. This remarkable success stems from strategic operational improvements and a focus on efficiency-driven initiatives.
Key cargo segments saw significant growth: iron ore and pellet exports increased by 2.23 per cent year-on-year, while coastal thermal coal, contributing over 30 per cent of the total cargo, grew by 3.57 per cent. Containerized cargo surged by a staggering 123.09 per cent, and gypsum and flux handling rose by 26.55 per cent.
These achievements reinforce Paradip Port’s position as a critical hub for coastal shipping and a key driver of India’s economic growth.
PPA Chairman P.L. Haranadh credited the success to the visionary leadership of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. “His guidance and inspiration have played a pivotal role in our journey,” said Haranadh, expressing gratitude to the port’s dedicated workforce, trade unions, user industries, and stevedores.
PPA Deputy Chairman Nilabhra Dasgupta, Advisor A.K. Bose, and Traffic Manager G. Edison joined Haranadh in celebrating this remarkable achievement.
