 Growing Concern Over Sleep Disorders

In the modern era, approximately 20–30 per cent of people experience sleep-related problems. Factors such as excessive consumption of fatty foods, unhealthy dietary habits, substance abuse, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and advancing age can contribute to various sleep disorders.

People experiencing sleep-related problems, such as snoring, insomnia, frequent awakenings during the night, temporary pauses in breathing during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, narcolepsy (a neurological disorder characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness) and abnormal behaviours during sleep, are advised to consult a doctor. A sleep study, when recommended by a medical professional, is essential for the proper evaluation and diagnosis of these conditions.

Sleep Study: A Painless Diagnostic Procedure

A sleep study, also known as polysomnography, is a painless, non-invasive overnight diagnostic test conducted while a person sleeps. It helps doctors assess various physiological parameters, including brain wave activity, heart rate, breathing patterns, oxygen levels, muscle activity and eye movements.

The test plays an important role in identifying and diagnosing different sleep disorders, enabling doctors to recommend appropriate treatment and management.

 Commitment to Quality Healthcare

On the occasion, Dr. Aditya Kumar Samal, Chairman of Utkal Hospital, stated that Utkal Hospital is dedicated to providing the highest standards of healthcare services to the general public.

The inauguration of the advanced Sleep Lab marks another significant step in strengthening the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and expanding access to specialised care for patients suffering from sleep-related disorders.
