New Delhi,Apr 26 :  The Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi was unanimously elected Mayor of Delhi on Wednesday, April 26, after BJP candidate Shikha Rai withdrew her nomination. With this, Oberoi has secured a second term as the head of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Rai told the House that she withdrew her nomination because the election to the standing committee had not been conducted.

Incumbent Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of the AAP got another term at the post, as BJP nominee Soni Pal also backed out of the race. The outcome of the mayoral elections was welcomed by the ruling AAP.

“Congratulations Shelly and Aley on again becoming Mayor and Dy Mayor, this time unopposed. Best wishes to both. People have huge expectations from us. Work hard to meet their expectations (sic),” AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet.

Senior AAP councillor Mukesh Goyal was the presiding officer for the mayoral election. Goyal is the senior-most councillor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Shelly Oberoi was elected as the Delhi Mayor on February 22, after three attempts to conduct the exercise were disrupted due to clashes between AAP and BJP councillors. Oberoi had defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes. Oberoi polled 150 votes, while Gupta received 116 of the total 266 votes polled.

The voting was held at the Civic Centre — the headquarters of the MCD. The city gets a new mayor after the end of a financial year.

The post of mayor in the national capital sees five single-year terms on a rotational basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category and the remaining two again for the open category.
