Eight Militants Lay Down Arms: Surrender in Chattisgarh’s Malkangiri Border

Malkangiri, February 19, 2024 – In a significant development, eight Maoist militants surrendered themselves to the Bijapur District Police in Chhattisgarh, near the Malkangiri District border. Among those who surrendered are prominent figures within the Maoist organization, including Budharam Kadti alias Sukhram, Sukhram Punem, Suku Punem, Joga Punem, and Bhima Madbi alias Zira, all members of the Eastern Local Guerrilla Squad (ELGS) operating under the Bhairamgarh Area Committee.
The surrendering militants have been offered an incentive amount of 25 thousand rupees each under the surrender and rehabilitation policy. This move comes amidst ongoing efforts by the Chhattisgarh government to suppress Maoist activities while simultaneously engaging in developmental projects aimed at improving conditions in the region.
The decision to surrender indicates a desire among these militants to integrate into mainstream society, disillusioned by the lack of respect and progress within the Maoist ranks. Reports suggest that discontent among lower-ranking members has been brewing due to the failure of senior Maoist leaders to address grievances, provide adequate leadership, or undertake meaningful development work. Furthermore, acts of violence against villagers and innocent tribals have contributed to a growing sense of disillusionment within the organization.
The surrender of these militants marks a significant blow to Maoist operations in the region while signaling a potential shift in the dynamics of conflict.
