KOLKATA, AUG 21 : A former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College has claimed that Dr Sandip Ghosh, who resigned as the principal after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, was involved in several illegal activities, including the selling of unclaimed bodies. In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Akhtar Ali also alleged that the murder accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was part of the former principal’s security.

Ali also claimed that Ghosh was engaged in trafficking biomedical waste and medical supplies to Bangladesh.

“Sandip Ghosh used to do business with unclaimed dead bodies. A case was also registered against him. He was also involved in trafficking biomedical waste. He used to sell it to the people who were part of his additional security. It was then sent to Bangladesh,” the former deputy superintendent said.

Akhtar Ali, who was posted at RG Kar Hospital till 2023, said he had raised an alarm about the illegal activities before the state vigilance commission, and he was also part of the enquiry committee against Ghosh. He said no action was taken against the former principal despite an investigation finding him guilty.

Ali claimed he had submitted an inquiry report to the state health department against Dr Ghosh but was transferred from RG Kar Hospital the same day.

“The day I submitted the inquiry report, I was transferred on the same day. The other two members of this committee were also transferred. I did whatever I could to save the students from this man, but I failed,” he said.

‘SANDIP GHOSH TOOK 20% COMMISSION ON EVERY TENDER’

Sandip Ghosh, who quit amid protests over the murder of the doctor, was given a fresh appointment at Calcutta Medical College within hours of his resignation. However, the Calcutta High Court pulled the government over it and sent Ghosh on indefinite leave.

The Mamata Banerjee government has also ordered an investigation into allegations of financial irregularities, since January 2021, at the institution.

Ali also asserted that Ghosh solicited bribes to pass students. “Some students were deliberately made to fail. So that he could recover the money,” he further said.

Detailing Ghosh’s modus operandi, the former RG Kar official said he took 20% commission on every tender. He also claimed that hospital-related tenders were only given to two close aides of Ghosh — Suman Hazra and Biplab Singha.

“Sandip Ghosh used to take money first and then give a work order. Suman Hazra and Biplab Singha had 12 companies. Only they were given tenders for every work,” Ali said.

Ali also alleged that Sandip Ghosh had the support of many “powerful people”, noting how he was brought back as the head of the hospital despite being transferred twice.

“Such a person should be taken into immediate custody. He is harmful to society,” the former RG Kar official said.
