Bhubaneswar, July 9: Authorities on Thursday opened six more sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, taking the total number of open gates to 10, to facilitate the controlled release of excess floodwater amid rising inflows into the reservoir.

Earlier in the day, four sluice gates were opened in the first phase of the operation to regulate the increasing water level. Following a review of the reservoir’s inflow and storage position, the authorities decided to open six additional gates as part of the flood management exercise.

Officials said the controlled discharge is aimed at maintaining the reservoir’s water level within safe operating limits while ensuring the regulated flow of water into downstream river systems.

The dam authorities are continuously monitoring the inflow, outflow and overall reservoir level. Decisions on opening additional sluice gates, if required, will be taken based on the evolving hydrological situation.

Meanwhile, the Sambalpur district administration has advised people living in low-lying areas downstream of the dam to remain vigilant, as the increased discharge may cause a rise in river water levels. Residents were urged to follow official advisories and avoid venturing into river channels or flood-prone areas until the situation normalises.
