Bhubaneswar, Dec. 4: The serene skies over Puri’s Blue Flag-certified beach transformed into a dynamic arena of aerial acrobatics and tactical displays as the Indian Navy celebrated Navy Day with grandeur and precision. Jet fighters soared high, weaving intricate patterns, while the elite Marine Commandos, known as MARCOS, showcased their combat expertise, captivating a massive audience.
Navy Day, observed annually on December 4, commemorates the Indian Navy’s decisive role in the 1971 India-Pakistan War, particularly its success during Operation Trident. This year’s celebrations held a unique significance, being hosted for the first time in Odisha, a state with a proud maritime legacy.
The event commenced with a ceremonial guard of honour presented to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, the chief guest of the occasion. Her presence lent a regal touch to the celebrations, reflecting the nation’s respect and admiration for its naval forces.
The aerial displays kicked off with the Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers (AJT), fondly known as the “Phantoms.” These multipurpose aircraft performed an array of daring manoeuvres, culminating in the iconic “Bomb Burst” formation—a breathtaking salute to the Navy’s operational capabilities.
Adding to the high-octane demonstrations, the MARCOS executed a realistic hostage rescue operation, complete with precision firing, flares, and rapid tactical movements. Their display of amphibious warfare and counter-terrorism skills drew thunderous applause from the audience, underscoring their reputation as one of the world’s most elite commando units.
The celebrations also featured demonstrations of naval weaponry, amphibious landings, and an exhibition of cutting-edge equipment, offering the audience a closer look at the technological advancements and strategic capabilities of the Indian Navy.
Among the attendees were Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Speaker Surama Padhy, state ministers, MLAs, defence enthusiasts, and tourists. For many, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the Indian Navy’s might in action against the picturesque backdrop of the Bay of Bengal.
In her address, President Murmu praised the Navy’s dedication to protecting India’s maritime interests and their pivotal role in humanitarian and disaster relief missions. She expressed particular pride in hosting the event in her home state of Odisha, which boasts a rich maritime heritage.
“This grand showcase not only honours the illustrious legacy of the Indian Navy but also instills a profound sense of pride and patriotism in all who witness it,” said Odisha’s Higher Education, Sports, and Youth Affairs Minister, Suryavamshi Suraj.
The event left an indelible mark on spectators, blending the Navy’s formidable strength with a message of national pride, all while highlighting Odisha’s growing importance on the national stage
