Bhubaneswar, Dec. 12: Tension gripped Balasore’s Nilagiri region on Friday after an injured tusker that had strayed from Jharkhand wandered into thickly populated localities, alarming villagers and disrupting daily routines.

The elephant, which appeared to have suffered a mouth injury, was first spotted near Jambudihi. According to forest officials, the tusker had likely broken away from its herd due to the seriousness of its wounds before moving along the Nilagiri–Sajanagad State Highway and into adjacent habitations.

Nilgiri Ranger officials said the animal remained active and could reunite with its herd once its condition stabilises. A veterinary team is expected to examine the injury and begin treatment shortly.

Forest personnel have been monitoring the tusker’s movements to avoid any escalation of human–wildlife conflict. Officials added that they will attempt to provide medical assistance and steer the animal safely back to the forested corridor.

Authorities have urged villagers to stay vigilant, avoid approaching the elephant, and report any sightings promptly. Locals, meanwhile, voiced concern both for the animal’s wellbeing and the danger it may pose if it strays further into residential areas.
